American Equity Senior Business Analyst in West Des Moines, Iowa



Responsible for reviewing, analyzing, specifying, and validating the business needs of various internal customers on large scale projects. This includes communicating with stakeholders and defining user requirements to the development team throughout the product life cycle. Precise documentation will be necessary to track and manage the progress of projects. This position will also be involved with improving business processes for different departments as necessary.

This role aligns and supports our Investment business, helping to build out system integration and further advance company strategy and partnership in this space.


  • Responsible for large project analysis and management (more than 80 hours).

  • Charts existing business processes in order to define current business activities for the development of procedures and models.

  • Identifies and establishes scope and parameters of process analysis in order to define impact, outcome criteria, and measure-taking actions.

  • Creates and deploys feedback mechanisms for end users. Analyzes results, makes recommendations for support process improvement, and implements changes.

  • Evaluates documented resolutions and analyze trends for ways to prevent repeated future problems.

  • Works with stakeholders and project team to prioritize collected requirements.

  • Researches, reviews, and analyzes the effectiveness and efficiency of existing requirements gathering processes and develop strategies for enhancing or further leveraging these.

  • Develops timeframes for process changes in order to support company objectives and business goals.

  • Meets with decision makers, systems owners, and end users to define business and operations requirements and systems goals.

  • Conducts research on software and hardware products to meet agreed upon requirements and to support implementation efforts.

  • Performs detailed problem analyses and scenarios; makes or implements recommendations to mitigate change risk and business impact.

  • Liaise with various business groups in the organization to facilitate implementation of new or improved business processes.

  • Coordinates and performs in-depth tests, including end-user reviews, for modified and new processes, and other post-implementation support.

  • Provides guidance and/or instruction to junior staff members.

  • Develops, standardizes, and maintains new or improved processes based on findings and analysis.

  • Communicates process changes, enhancements, and modifications – verbally or through written documentation – to management, peers, staff, and other employees so that issues and solutions are understood.

  • Researches issues for Quality Assurance, business users, and development teams.

  • Communicates with QA, business users, and development teams on project requests.

  • Defines requirements and specifications for users with all related design ideas and completes documentation.

  • Manages projects and follows up with requirements as necessary to ensure scheduled delivery time of the product. Enforces and redefines as needed.

  • Assists in testing on projects.

  • Researches various business processes for improving efficiency and quality at the departmental and organizational level.

  • Queries and analyzes data.

  • Support of current systems and any new that may be implemented.

  • Actively participates in Business Analyst Center of Excellence

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university; or four to six years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


  • Logical and efficient with attention to detail

  • Experience overseeing the design, development, and implementation of software and hardware solutions, systems, or products

  • Has knowledge of Annuity Service and Processing

  • Analyzing Information, Problem Solving

  • American Equity Software experience preferred

  • Clear communication skills (orally and written)

  • One year minimum of Project Management

  • Two years minimum of Business Analyst 2

  • Minimum of 10 successful medium size (20-80 hour) project implementations

  • Experience with Word, Excel, Visio, SQL, Confluence, JIRA, and Outlook
