Respiratory Therapist (RT) works under the general supervision of a Registered Polysomnographic Technician, the Sleep Center Management, Medical Director, or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. RT must complete a minimum of 500 hours of supervised training, A-STEP program and pass a certification exam thru the American Board of Sleep Medicine or the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists. Upon successful completion, Certified Sleep Technologist will independently perform a variety of sleep testing in the West Lakes Sleep Center or Accredited Mobile Sites.Typical shifts are 7pm-7am (72 hours per pay period) $4/hr overnight differential

Education: Graduate of an accredited respiratory therapy program.

Agrees to enroll and complete full series of online Accredited Sleep Technology Education modules (A-STEP) within first year of employment. 500 training hours in-lab required prior to module completion. Training and program costs will be paid by The Iowa Clinic with signed work agreement.

Licensure/certification: Completion of an accredited Respiratory Care Program that is accredited by Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) and completion of sleep add-on program (A-STEP) accredited by American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS).

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrates ability to consistently meet Sleep Center work schedule demands.

  • Collect, analyze and integrate patient information in order to identify and meet the patient specific needs (Physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history), and to determine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols.

  • Provides appropriate explanation of pre-testing, testing and post-testing procedures to patients, their families, and others as required to ensure the patients’ understanding of the procedure/test being performed. Obtaining signed consent forms from patient.

  • Records medical history pertinent to Polysomnography testing.

  • Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and make adjustments, if necessary. Prepares patient for Polysomnography testing: -Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards. -Perform appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and make adjustments, if necessary. -Perform positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting.

  • Performs various Polysomnographic procedures.

  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

  • Evaluate proper and accurate completion of Polysomnography testing, completes additional paperwork for record keeping, and ensures the proper storage of completed test for the interpreting Physician to review.

  • Performs functions other than described as required (mask cleaning/laundry).
