Pine Acres Rehabilitation & Care Center Dietary Aide days, evenings, weekends in West Des Moines, Iowa

General Job Summary:

Very rewarding and meaningful position. Our Dietary Aides are responsible for assisting with prepping and serving meals for residents and visitors in a nursing facility and assisted living. They also supervise meal service and direct delivery of trays according to the resident's dietary sheets. The Dietary Aide is responsible for the sanitary condition of the cooking and dining areas .

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Dietary Aide is responsible for a number of duties as listed below. All of these duties are considered essential functions unless otherwise noted.

  • Perform food preparation tasks according to standardized recipes and special diet orders. Adjust recipes to meet quantity or special dietary needs using only approved substitutes.

  • Prepare food items at proper time, attractively and at correct temperature; make sure food items are stored at correct temperatures at all times.

  • Keep cooking and serving areas straightened and clean to aide in efficiency of work performed; clean refrigeration units and storerooms.

  • Supervise meal service and direct delivery of trays according to dietary needs; check special dietary trays for accuracy.

  • Report broken kitchen equipment to the manager.

  • Prepare beverages (juice, tea, milk) and supplements (yogurt, ice cream, Ensure, etc.) in accordance with beverage list or counts. Serve in ice filled trays to ensure proper temperature is maintained.

  • Assist other departments with restocking nutritional supplements or requests from the kitchen.

  • Serve entrees and desserts on trays to residents. Follow serving lists to ensure proper diets and specialty items are served correctly.

  • Clean and sanitize all utensils and equipment as food preparation progresses and following meal service.

  • Assist in dining rooms as needed.

  • Cooperate in keeping kitchen area clean and in order at all times; clean refrigeration units and storerooms as needed.

  • Keep serving and dining areas straightened and clean to aid in efficiency of work performed.

  • Prevent food waste.

  • Pour juices and beverages (coffee, tea, milk, cocoa, etc.) and serve on trays at correct temperature, neatly and in amounts called for at the proper time.

  • Fill orders for between-meal nourishments

  • Wrap flatware in napkins.

  • Set trays for meals, place napkin, flatware, condiments, straws, and diet cards on trays as needed.

  • Remove dirty dishes after meal is served. Wipe dining tables and chairs following each meal. Maintain cleanliness of Fountain dining room.

  • Wash dishes, pots and pans; store clean dishes in proper location.

  • Assist with general cleaning and food preparation tasks as needed; restock items as needed.

  • Maintain daily care of dishwasher and dishwashing area, dish storage area and food carts.

  • Empty and thoroughly clean trash cans daily; replace liners and return cans to stations.

  • Mop floors on dietary aide side of kitchen after each meal.

  • Assist with training and orientation of new department employees.

  • Maintain resident information and Fountain West internal affairs in strict confidence.

  • Follow Pine Acres policies concerning personal grooming, appearance, and appropriate dress code requirements.

  • Other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

    Qualifications:

    v Education

    o High school diploma or G.E.D. preferred, but not required. The Dietary Aide must be able to read, write, and follow oral and written directions in English. Must also be able to successfully complete Modified Diet course and Sanitation training as provided by Pine Acres as required by the IA Dept of Inspections & Appeals.

    v Continuous Education

    o Must attend in-service training.

    v Work Experience

    o Previous food service experience preferred, but not required. Extensive on the job training provided.

    Physical Activity Requirements:

    v Lifting Requirements

    o The Dietary Aide is frequently called upon to lift items up to 10 pounds while preparing foods in the kitchen. Dietary Aides will regularly be required to lift objects between 10 and 25 pounds while performing duties in and around the kitchen. Dietary Aides will infrequently be called upon to lift items over 25 pounds. Lifting in excess of 50 pounds is not required.

    v Carrying Requirements

    o The Dietary Aide is frequently called upon to carry items up to 10 pounds while preparing foods in the kitchen. The Dietary Aide will regularly be required to carry items between 10 and 25 pounds while performing duties in and around the kitchen. The Dietary Aide will infrequently be called upon to carry items over 25 pounds. Carrying in excess of 50 pounds is not required.

    v Sight Requirements

    o The Dietary Aide is required to have 20/20 correct vision.

    v Hearing Requirements

    o The Dietary Aide is required to have normal range of hearing, as corrected

    v Socialization Requirements

    o The Dietary Aide is required to be able to work with all other persons in the department-the ability to get along and socialize with others within the department and other departments is essential. The Dietary Aide should have basic socialization skills in dealing with residents.

    v Other Physical Requirements

    o The Dietary Aide will regularly be called upon for standing, walking, bending, and twisting. The Dietary Aide will occasionally be called upon for crawling, squatting, kneeling, and crouching.
