Job Title: FOOD SERVICE- FOOD PREP

Reports to: Kitchen Managers and Food Service Director

Status: Hourly FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

BASIC FUNCTION: To participate in the prep and service of W-SR school meals through the W-SR Food Service program to all buildings within the district, as well as catered meals to Janesville school. Responsible for completing food prep, serving food, and cleaning equipment and area, according to the Iowa Food Code requirements.

EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Must be 18 years of age

  • Experience in food service preferred, but not required..

  • Knowledge or the ability to be trained to meet the responsibilities of the job..

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, or CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Must clear criminal record check and child and dependent adult abuse registries

  • Must be 18 years of age

  • Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment physical

  • Blood borne pathogens and continuing education through food service, training required

  • *Shell Rock lunch food prep position must obtain a ServSafe certification within 6 months of hire date

TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES:

  • Basic problem solving skills

  • Ability to acquire skills necessary to prep and serve food, according to the Iowa Food Code regulations

  • Ability to acquire skills necessary to operate and clean food service equipment and areas, according to Iowa Food Code regulations

  • Ability to complete food production sheet for both breakfast and lunch service

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to changes without notice.

  • Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.

  • Able to take direction and respond to requests in a courteous, helpful manner.

  • Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies and building and department procedures

  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to appropriate supervisor/administrator.

JOB GOAL:

  • To serve W-SR school meals to students in a pleasant, timely and appropriate manner, meeting Iowa Food Code regulations.

  • To demonstrate a positive attitude, loyalty, cooperation, teamwork, attendance, and safety.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Moderate amount of food preparation, including but not limited to washing, cutting and preparing fresh produce for fruit and vegetable meal components, following a standardized recipe, cooking items to appropriate temperatures while keeping quality of the product in mind

  • Sets up service line, counts trays for meals service number accuracy, gathers appropriate utensil for service, according to production sheet

  • Serves all food required in the food services program, according to production sheet

  • Reads, follows and completes productions sheets daily, with accuracy

  • Notes and records food, refrigerator/freezer and dish machine temperatures. Communicates any inappropriate temperatures to kitchen manager.

  • Sets up and operates dish machine with safety and appropriate use of chemicals

  • Operates all food preparation equipment in a safe manner, including ovens, combi ovens, garbage disposal, microwave, hot carts, can opener, use of knives and serving utensils.

  • Cleans and sanitizes equipment, food preparation areas and cafeteria tables, as needed, while maintaining the highest possible standards of sanitation.

  • Makes recommendations to improve service and ensure more efficient operation.

  • Follows the chain of command as required.

  • Maintains good public relations with students, parents, faculty, and community.

  • Reports to work each day clean, neat, and in uniform.

  • Must be able to get along with a wide variety of people.

  • Has regular attendance. Follows attendance restriction due to illness, according to Food Code.

  • Reports to work when an emergency arises.

  • Manages one’s own time efficiently.

  • Attends annual safety training including blood borne pathogen, asbestos, MSDS, confined space, etc.

  • Attends in-service training and school meetings as appropriate.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must be capable of using cleaning chemicals with recognized inhalation and absorption hazards.

  • Must be capable of working in extreme temperatures, humid, and dusty environments.
