Job Summary

The Supervisor of Yard Operations is responsible for overseeing operations of a rail yard. Supervisors of Yard Operations oversee the arrival and departure of cars in their rail yard in a timely fashion. This includes assigning duties to train crews, giving train crews direction on switching inbound and outbound traffic in accordance with the operating plan, ensuring cars are pulled and placed to the appropriate Customers in a timely fashion, and work closely with the Transportation Manager to supervise the safe and efficient movement of trains. When the Local Train Manager are required to work in the field, or if the Division Transportation Manager are off or in need of assistance the Supervisor of Yard Operations helps fill in as an Assistant Transportation Manager for the territory in making operational decision for on-line train meets, work events, and clerical needs.

Major Responsibilities

  • Manage yard operations as outlined in CN’s operating plan.

  • Supervise and manage the activities of train crews, utility conductors and cab drivers. In addition, effectively work with Transportation Manager, transportation clerks, crew callers, engineering, mechanical, customer service, dispatchers, foreign railroads and outside agencies to manage his/her yard.

  • Comply with safe work procedures and practices as well as deliver a high level of productivity and customer service.

  • Utilize strong organizational and problem solving skills in order to effectively and efficiently give direction on yard operations.

  • Work with foreign carriers and terminals to coordinate movement of trains and interchanges over CN territory.

  • Work effectively with others in a supervisory capacity, observing, counseling and enforcing operating and safety rules.

  • Work with crews and Transportation Manager to ensure compliance with safety rules and procedures.

Skills / Functional Knowledge:

  • Strong ability to perform well under pressure and in stressful situations and circumstances

  • Ability to understand train scheduling and Railroad Operating rules

  • Must possess logistical thinking, critical thinking and multitasking skills

  • Ability to successfully collaborate in a team environment while prioritizing tasks and instructions

  • Ability to work autonomously and adapt to changing situations

  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision

  • Must have the ability to stay alert and prepared for unusual conditions or circumstances

  • Demonstrate good teamwork and maintain positive interactions with others

  • Demonstrate strong problem solving, decision making and planning skills.

  • Dedication to getting the job done while meeting established standards of quality, safety and client satisfaction

  • Demonstrates a proven track record in troubleshooting and problem solving

  • Demonstrated history and experience in safety compliance

  • Ability to obtain USOR (United States Operating Rules) Qualification

Education / Certification / Experience:

  • Relevant work experience in similar working conditions or regulatory/safety environment

  • Possesses thorough working knowledge of FRA regulations and Railway Operating Rules needed, with a strong background in train and engine service.

  • United States Operating Rules (USOR) qualified

  • Post-secondary education

  • Basic computer skills
