The Housing Assistant is responsible for the direct care of the clients who use the Emergency Shelter services. These services include providing a safe, secure environment for individuals and families while they complete a goals plan to lead to self-sufficiency. Process client intake and exit interviews. The position is part time.
Document shelter activities and incidents through the shelter log, client files, and incident reports.
Answer phone, take messages, and follow all confidentiality procedures.
Provide services to residents, including but not limited to: providing personal care items, cleaning supplies, linens, and padlocks.
Supervise Shelter activities and individuals during day to day activities.
Oversee all meal/snack times and clean-up of the kitchen/serving areas, including supervision of weekend meal preparation.
Maintain the safety of clients by accessing Emergency Response Services, the Waterloo/Cedar
Falls police, paramedics, and/or Social Services personnel.
Maintain the security of clients by monitoring the alarm system and security cameras, completing routine building checks, inspecting incoming parcels and bags, and allowing only approved
individuals into the shelter building.
Attend scheduled meetings and training opportunities.
Cross-train to perform duties in either 32-bed Women & Children’s Emergency Shelter or 18-bed
Men’s Emergency Shelter
Inform and advising the Housing Coordinator of problematic areas in a prompt and efficient manner.
Perform other duties as assigned or needed.
Must be willing to work evening, overnight, and weekends.
Qualifications:Individual must be confident and have an assertive manner; must have the ability to work with homelessindividuals in a professional and compassionate manner. The ability to relate to individuals in a warm, understanding, and empathetic nature without prejudice to the demographics of the homeless population; must demonstrate honesty and integrity while working independently without direct supervision and must have the ability to work in a team atmosphere. Individual must be able to pass a background check.Also, individual must be willing to become familiar and supportive of The Salvation Army mission and purpose of operation. Education:High School diploma or equivalent knowledge of or willingness to attend training in chemicaldependency, mental health, crisis intervention, and CPR/AED
Physical Demands/ Work Environment:This Position is required to do light to moderate physical work. In order to successfully performthe essential functions of this position, the individual is regularly required to remain stationary for some periods of time, use hands and fingers, communicate, move, occasionally required to position self to stoop, kneel or crouch, frequently required to reach with and use arms and hands as required in using standard office equipment and a PC. Individual must be able to frequently lift up to twenty pounds. Specific vision abilities by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to focus. Individual must be able to work with clients that have poor social skills, suffer from mental illness, and have substance abuse problems. The work environment for this position is a residential environment with a moderate to loud noise level. Work schedule varies including weekends, possibly second and or third shifts.
