Position Title: Instructional Coach

Reports To: Director of Teaching & Learning, Building Administrators, and District Administrators

Job Type: Teacher Leadership

Job Goals:

The Instructional Coach acts as an instructional leader who shares the responsibility of carrying out the vision, mission, and goals of the school community via the district and school improvement plans. The Instructional Coach works with district leadership personnel to improve student achievement. This position is responsible for providing coaching, co-teaching, and job-embedded professional development related to Professional Learning Communities (PLC), Iowa Academic Standards, school improvement plans, and MTSS Structure.

This position supports all teachers in improving instructional practices which facilitate learning by modeling effective instructional practices and coaching teachers on how to enhance student engagement for learning in all curriculum, gifted, and special education areas. The Instructional Coach will provide guidance to teachers to support their efforts in actively using formative and summative assessments, and assist with the use of digital tools to support 21st century teaching and learning. The instructional coach will support teachers in using current district instructional practices and will support integration of literacy across the content areas.

The Instructional Coach, working collaboratively with the district leadership personnel, will develop the coach’s schedule to prioritize work with teachers, classrooms, and/or students on a regular basis. The Instructional Coach will observe, co-teach, provide feedback regarding implementation of Characteristics of Effective Instruction and examine the effect on student learning. The Instructional Coach will work with teachers to develop strategies and/or provide direct intervention to support students.

Knowledge and Skills Set:

An ideal candidate will have knowledge and competence in the Iowa Academic Standards as well as expertise in recognizing, demonstrating, and analyzing effective instructional practices, methodologies, and/or strategies. Knowledge of instructional practices that effectively engage students is essential, as is an understanding of the impact of diversity on learning. In addition, the ideal candidate will have the ability to appropriately utilize formative, diagnostic, and summative assessments, participate effectively in professional collaboration within the school’s collaborative learning teams and successfully demonstrate the use of digital tools to enhance teaching and learning. The ideal candidate will also have excellent oral and written literacy, problem-solving, team-building, interpersonal, self-reflective, and self-awareness skills. The ideal candidate is highly results-oriented and is skillful in presentation, leading data organization, data analysis, and data coaching to improve teaching and learning.

The Instructional Coach must demonstrate the ability to consistently remain loyal to the mission and vision of the school and the district. He/she must balance supporting teachers through change while simultaneously promoting system progress. He/she should demonstrate the ability to thrive and persevere under pressure and welcome challenges and demands in a fast-paced, 21st century learning environment.

Preparation and Experience:

  • Holds a Master’s degree or working toward a Master’s degree

  • Current Iowa teaching certificate

  • Minimum three years of successful teaching experience

  • A demonstrated track record of successful mentoring/coaching, leadership, and facilitation of adult learning

  • Knowledge of Characteristics of Effective Instruction with successful application to teaching and learning

  • Demonstrates high capacity to evoke students’ motivation to positively impact student learning and achievement

  • Provides evidence of meeting all the Iowa teaching standards.

  • Working knowledge and understanding of Iowa Professional Development Model and PLC Structure

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with district leadership personnel to determine specific goals, measurable outcomes, action plans, schedule, and timeline to specify coaching partners and student intervention plans

  • Supports the establishment, implementation, and revision of district curriculum, instruction, and assessment in the all content areas

  • Co-plans, co-teaches/models best practice and provides real-time coaching and feedback to help teachers implement Iowa Academic Standards with fidelity and to meet student learning outcomes

  • Analyze results and provides feedback in the implementation of professional learning to district stakeholders

  • Provides feedback and observation of content knowledge, methodology, skills, differentiation, and/or impact on student outcomes with staff

  • Assists administration and PLCs in analyzing student data and facilitates adjustments in instruction

  • Effectively work with adult learners

  • Implements digital-age best practices in curriculum, instruction, differentiation, and data and assessment

  • Provides resources to support staff in the MTSS Structure for students, to ensure high levels of engagement and learning

  • Participates in continuous growth opportunities to deepen knowledge in curricular, instructional, differentiation, and leadership practices

  • Engages in active communication and positive relationships with staff, families, and community members

  • Demonstrates organizational skills and maintains appropriate confidentiality with records

  • Protects the confidentiality of professional relationships

  • Other duties as assigned by administration, including classroom instruction and/or teaching to meet the needs of the district

Performance Standards:

  • Skilled in using student work, diagnostic data, and performance data to make informed instructional strategy decisions

  • Understanding of the Iowa Academic Standards for grade levels or disciplines and willingness to help others

Meeting Requirements:

  • Attends leadership meetings at least two times per year with all TLC leadership positions

  • Attends weekly meetings with all instructional coaches

  • Attends weekly meetings with building principal

  • Attends curriculum mapping sessions

  • Supports ELL and Special Education PLCs

  • Meet with staff before or after school hours based on needs

Terms of Employment: Teacher Leadership & Compensation Salary Supplement Pay (paid with TLC Grant Funds)

1-year contract with 20 additional contract days (160 additional hours); Reapply every year
