Summary

This position serves as a Patient Services Assistant (PSA) under the screening and escort section of the Environmental Management Service at the Iowa City VA Medical Center (ICVAMC). The position is responsible for supporting the daily COVID-19 screening of patients, staff and visitors. This position also includes escorting and transportation of patients. This position is a highly public one that requires excellent customer service skills.

Responsibilities

This announcement is recruiting 30 temporary positions and will remain open until positions are filled, and may close prior to the posted date: Full time: 20 positions (1.0 FTE) designated to work 40 hours/week Part time: 10 positions ( .4 FTE) designated to work 16 hours/week Candidates hired into this temporary appointment are eligible for health insurance and leave accrual during the appointment. The PSA is responsible for performing a variety of administrative and clerical duties and is the liaison between the Escort section and other VA staff in order to assure that Escort is responsive to their needs within the capability of available manpower. The PSA will report issues or needs directly to the Screening and Escort Supervisor, Environmental Management Service who is the immediate supervisor for the position. Major duties of the position include but may not be limited to: Ensure people entering the facility are properly screened for COVID-19Safely and efficiently transports patients, and other patient related articles. Receive transport requests by telephone. Expected to be well-informed of work progress, establish work priorities and make adjustments to comply with new or revised recommendations from the supervisor. Prepare and maintain records reflecting work volume and is responsible for the clerical administrative aspects of scheduling and processing necessary to complete all escort activities. Keep up-to-date with room and clinic changes and recommend to the supervisor the revision of escort directions and resources to meet these changes. Consult with the supervisor to make changes or coordinate work as needed. Coordinate the work of volunteers assigned to Escort, assign requests on selective consideration of transportation method needed to move the patient. Make changes to meet deadlines and priorities set by nursing service. Assure compliance with hand-off communication procedures, checking each patient's name band prior to transporting to ensure proper patient identification. Provide and transport equipment as requested. Disinfect/wipe down transport equipment with approved cleaning product prior to each patient transport. Request assistance from the nursing team to transfer patients to or from transport equipment, if needed. Responsible for notifying nursing or ancillary personnel upon arrival or departure of patients. Attend to the care of documents relating to the patient. Immediately report any unusual symptoms of patients i.e., fainting or shortness of breath during time of transport. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/30/2020. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: General Experience: You must have six months of general experience that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. General experience may include: providing customer service in person, by telephone or through electronic communication; interacting and maintaining a positive relationships with groups and individuals of diverse backgrounds in a clinical setting. OR Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 1 years of education above high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college, or university. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) OR Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of general experience and education beyond high school. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned. Then, identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-03 level. Physical Requirements: Extended sitting and answering numerous phone calls. Required to stand and walk up to 8 hours a day throughout the facility. Will be required to climb and descend stairs to reach certain destinations. Will be required to push and pull wheelchairs and other equipment weighing up to 400 pounds. Will be required to transport patient belongings and miscellaneous equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. Will be required to transport patients and items up and down an incline of 1 inch per foot. Work Environment: Work is in a Medical Center setting and involves possible exposure to contagious disease which may require protective gear and precautions.
