Multi-Specialty Anesthesia Division Chief

The University of Iowa department of Anesthesia is seeking an accomplished academic anesthesiologist to serve as chief of its Division of Multispecialty Anesthesia. Anesthesia for the following surgical specialties are included in this division: general surgery, otolaryngology, oral surgery, vascular surgery, trauma surgery, urology, transplant surgery, and ophthalmology. This position is available at the rank of associate professor or professor in the clinical or tenure track. The division chief will have a clear vision for advancing anesthesia for these specialties as well as advancing the careers of anesthesiologists who provide multispecialty anesthesia. The candidate will have experience collaborating with perioperative physicians and other colleagues and demonstrated leadership skills in shaping the future of the division.

About Us

The UI Department of Anesthesia has its roots in the first formal anesthesiology residency program to be established at an American university. Today, the Department boasts more than 80 faculty members, 57 residents, and 12 fellows who provide clinical anesthesia services for more than 50 operating rooms at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, as well as procedural anesthesia services for Pediatrics, Radiology, and nearly 20 other surgical and non-surgical clinics and specialty suites. This broad range of services places the Department in the 99th percentile for diversity of surgical cases among U.S. hospitals.

Departmental faculty serves on editorial boards of major anesthesiology journals, provide refresher courses for the American Society of Anesthesiologists annual meeting and serve as board examiners of the American Board of Anesthesiology. Department researchers are funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, and non-governmental organizations. The Department has an extensive and well-organized mentoring program for junior faculty and is proud of its tradition of providing a wide range of career development opportunities.

Division Chief Role

The Division Chief will be responsible for actualizing our tripartite mission--clinical care, education, and research-as it relates to general anesthesiology or anesthesiology within subspecialty areas of practice. These responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with medical directors o lead clinical operations to ensure consistently high-quality patient care with efficient and innovative use of clinical and material resources
  • Promoting effective collaborations among divisional faculty and other clinical and research faculty across campus
  • Facilitating undergraduate and graduate medical education
  • Recruiting new faculty to the division and supporting their career development
  • Developing innovative scholarship in multidisciplinary anesthesia

Employee Benefits and Compensation

  • Competitive base salary and quarterly clinical incentive package
  • One-time lump sum transition payment; relocation payment, if applicable
  • Annual continuing education allowance
  • Malpractice coverage, and licensing and exam fees reimbursements
  • Generous benefits package, including low monthly premium rates for medical insurance, annual vacation accruals of 24 days (capped at 48), and annual sick time accruals of 18 days with no accrual cap
  • Employer retirement contribution is 10% of the base salary (capped at $26,000)

Education Requirement:

  • Qualified candidates must show successful completion of an approved residency program in anesthesiology
  • Candidates must hold an MD, DO, MBBS, or equivalent degree

Required Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be board-certified in Anesthesiology (or non-US Board equivalent)
  • Candidates must demonstrate experience working effectively in a diverse environment
  • Candidates must be eligible for medical licensure in the state of Iowa

Certifications:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Fellowship training or equivalent clinical experience in any of the aforementioned subspecialty areas
  • Interest in teaching and/or basic or clinical research
