Drake University Head Start, a comprehensive early childhood program, is seeking a professional candidate to join their team in a new position serving as a full time substitute supporting teachers, teacher associates, and children in daily activities in the classroom. This individual will participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of a developmentally appropriate early childhood curriculum and practice. This position will consist of light cooking, assisting the teacher or teacher associate, and working directly with children. Some time spent completing paperwork. This position may include completing home visits for the Head Start and Early Head Start programs. This position will involve travel within a six county service area (Boone, Story, Jasper, Marion, Polk and Warren counties). Therefore, the successful candidate must have a valid drivers license and must meet the insurability criteria to drive on behalf of the University. This is a 9 month, full time position.
Function Percent Description
01 30% Prepare breakfast, lunch, snack, and any required recipes by following proper and safe food preparation methods. Participate in snack and mealtime activities by assisting staff with serving food, eating with the children, and cleaning up after meals following CACFP guidelines.
02 10% Assist staff with the implementation of child-directed learning experiences following lesson plans. Assist in the collection of documentation to meet individual developmental levels and learning styles to promote positive child outcomes.
03 10% Maintain an organized, clean, and safe classroom. Ensure all sanitation processes are completed per Drake University Head Start policies and procedures.
04 10% Create and foster an environment where staff are responsive and promote positive social-emotional skills through explicit instruction, appropriate guidance and techniques.
05 5% Maintain an organized, clean classroom and present interesting ideas and activities to share with children.
06 5% Prepare and maintain all necessary paperwork and records according to CACFP guidelines. Complete shopping and review orders of food and health supplies made for the program. Drive for business purposes to make necessary purchases for the program.
07 5% Develop and maintain positive communication while respecting confidentiality. Establish professional relationships built upon respect and trust with parents, staff, volunteers, and visitors in order to respond to children's needs. Develop and maintain positive relationship with families through two-way communication to promote sustained family engagement.
08 5% Assist in maintaining accurate confidential records within applicable regulations and performance standards as applicable.
09 5% Continue professional growth by collaborating with other staff and participating in professional development opportunities.
10 5% Assist teachers in supervising students in non-classroom settings such as indoor large motor activities, playground supervision, and arrival and dismissal with families.
11 5% Provide assistance to children during daily napping and bathroom routine by offering guidance to promote independence and support when needed.
12 5% With training and assistance of the Head Start nurse, follow written health/emergency care plans and give medication as directed. Give basic first aid to any child or staff in need.
13 0% Other duties as assigned. Ensure compliance with Federal Head Start Program Performance Standards, state and local regulations and rules. Ensure confidentiality of all documents maintained in the department. Promote Head Start philosophy and initiatives. Prompt and regular attendance.
? A minimum of a CDA (Child Development Associate) credential, ability to obtain a CDA within 18 months of hire or an Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education required. A minimum of one year of work in an early childhood setting required. Head Start experience preferred. A current Iowa Driver's License and the ability to be insured by the University's insurance carrier required.
