Summary General Areas of Responsibilities: Performs pre-anesthetic evaluations, collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to prepare the anesthesia delivers of all forms of anesthesia, and provides intra and post-operative care of patients. Provides emergency airway and resuscitation management throughout the facility and establishes effective working relationships with all levels of staff throughout VACIHCS. Nurse Anesthesia: is an advanced clinical nursing specialty based upon a graduate level curriculum focused on development of clinical judgment and critical thinking. CRNAs are qualified to render patients insensible to pain and emotional stress during surgical, obstetrical, diagnostic, and invasive procedures utilizing general and regional anesthesia and all levels of sedation. (Guidelines for Core Clinical Privileges, AANA 2005). CRNA practice is dynamic and evolving. CRNA's function within a defined scope of practice and work collaboratively with physician anesthesiologists. Nurse anesthetists provide services to facilitate diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical procedures. They may also participate in resolution of acute airway problems. All nurses are expected engage in professional role activities, including leadership, appropriate to their education, position, and practice setting (ANA, 2004.) Each nurse anesthetist facilitates the "Mission, Vision and Values" statements of the organization. Integral to these statements is the promotion of interdisciplinary, evidenced-based practice; customer service and satisfaction; and quality of care for those we serve. The nurse is accountable to self, the patients, peers, the immediate supervisor and ultimately, to society for his/her professional actions (ANA, 2004). The CRNA will report to the Chief CRNA, to the Chief of Anesthesia and the Chief of Surgery who is responsible for the provision of surgical care and staff. General Areas of Responsibilities: Performs pre-anesthetic evaluations, collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to prepare the anesthesia delivers of all forms of anesthesia, and provides intra and post-operative care of patients. Provides emergency airway and resuscitation management throughout the facility and establishes effective working relationships with all levels of staff throughout VACIHCS. Routine Professional Duties: The entry level CRNA translates the principles of professional Nurse Anesthesia practice into appropriate patient care. Performs the pre-anesthetic patient history and physical, including the collection of preoperative consults and data, from which an appropriate anesthetic plan is formulated. The anesthetic risks, benefits, and options are described to the patient. Administers inhalation, regional, intravenous, local, and topical anesthetics and continuously evaluates the patient's physical status and response to anesthesia. Performs post-anesthetic management of patients to optimize the recovery from anesthesia and minimize pain. Provides patient care that is a breast of changing concepts and advancements in the profession while working effectively in an interdisciplinary environment for improvement of services for patient care. Practices with colleagues and peers utilizing a collaborative team concept of anesthesia care while demonstrating effective communication skills and professional behaviors that promote cooperation and interdisciplinary teamwork. Education. Formal and informal teaching of clinical staff, patients, and families. The individual is responsible for maintaining competencies by attending relevant continuing education programs and maintaining active professional involvement within the academic community. Qualification Requirements: A degree in nursing from a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate state-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accredited bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Master's or Doctoral Degree from a program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing or the Commission (ACEN-Formerly NCLAC) or the Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Nurse Practitioners must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level III - Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required.
