Distinguishing Features of the Class

Under general supervision, to safeguard swimming pool/aquatic center patrons in various water areas and depths of the facilities, and to ensure proper use of pool area. To assume all pool responsibilities in the absence of the Swimming Pool Supervisor.

Positions are available at the following aquatic centers and pools: Ashworth; Birdland; Nahas; Northwest and Teachout.

Approximate employment duration: Up to 40 hours per week. Assigned work hours between 8:00 AM and 11:00 PM including weekends and holidays from May through September.

Deadline: Applications are accepted until such time a sufficient number of qualified applications is received to fill the positions.

Note: Hiring preference is given to applicants having the ability to work consistently throughout the season.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the work performed by these positions are currently limited or not being performed. The positions are posted now in preparation for post COVID-19 operations.

Acceptable Experience and Training

  • Must be at least 18 years old.

  • Prior Lifeguard or Swimming Instructor experience preferred.

  • Valid driver's license or equivalent mobility required.

Required Special Qualifications

  • Candidates are to required possess a valid and current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification and CPR Certification or have the ability to obtain required certifications by employment date.

  • Certifications may be obtained through the American Red Cross and must be valid through September 10, 2021.

  • Requires satisfactory criminal, sex offender and driving record background checks.

  • Passing a pre-employment physical and drug screen is required prior to employment.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • Performs all duties of the Lifeguard position;

  • Maintains constant watch for accidents or potential accidents at a swimming pool;

  • Enforces rules governing the conduct of persons at a swimming pool, warning patrons against hazardous practices;

  • Possess and utilize superior customer services skills;

  • Assists persons in distress by application of safety techniques, resuscitation and First Aid administration;

  • Assists with maintenance work on or around the swimming pool;

  • Assumes responsibility of assigning daily tasks to the guard staff;

  • Assumes managerial tasks in the absence of the manager;

  • Performs related work as required.
