Summary:

Facebook is seeking a Controls Engineer, Technical Lead Manager to join our Data Center Facility Operations team. Our data centers serve as the foundation upon which our software operates to meet the demands of our customers. Our controls systems, direct digital controller and programmable logic controller, provides the smarts to efficiently and reliably run our data centers. The candidate will lead a team that supports the establishment and maintenance of the controls systems for new site deployments and retrofits, improve and develop quality assurance and device management methods and procedures, and own escalated production issues.

Required Skills:

  1. Manage a small team of individual contributors on a high-impact/high technical complexity/ambiguous area while also being a tech-lead/individual contributor on that team. Contributes deep knowledge and subject matter expertise on projects working toward mastery within pillar.

  2. Leads design/technical direction, quality efforts, technical reviews for their team and adjacent teams.

  3. An expert in the field of operation and maintenance of Critical Facilities. Mentors other members on how to articulate complex concepts and implementation strategies for addressing critical issues that have company-wide impact and the development of the best corrective actions to avoid the same in the future.

  4. Actively influence the design of the strategy and shaping of the roadmap within scope - sets the technical vision for their team.

  5. With minimal guidance, is able to ensure the team is healthy, developing self-awareness on their team’s health and beginning to diagnose and troubleshoot issues.

  6. Consistent track record of executing efficiently against strategy of complex/ambiguous projects. Proactively detects the largest problems with neighboring product teams and contributes to resolution.

  7. Delivers multiple large-scale projects with multiple levels of dependencies with multi-team, group-wide impact with complexity.

  8. Strategically invests in efforts to improve product quality and engineering efficiency in the long-run. Builds and develops a team and culture that has passion for and organically drives product quality and engineering efficiency.

  9. Constantly aware and has a deep understanding of the larger issues and priorities across the org and keeps the broader teams up to speed through effective messaging. Understand and parse out what is relevant and important to peers and leadership.

  10. Act as point of escalation for complex system malfunctions, driving Root Cause Analysis process with cross functional team.

  11. Collaborate closely with the other cross functional teams in Facebook - Construction, Field Operations, Vendors, Design, Hardware Engineering to ensure the best outcome for Facebook’s projects.

  12. Exercise wide latitude in determining strategic objectives and approaches to critical assignments. Requires minimal guidance from management for structuring and leading teams.

  13. Actively involved in sourcing, interviewing and closing candidates for immediate and adjacent teams. Identifies development opportunities for other team members and provides coaching and technical mentorship to other IC's from within and outside of their org.

  14. Approximately 30% travel.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's Degree in a STEM field, Technical School or work experience equivalent.

  2. 15+ years of combined controls experience in Operation and Maintenance, Design, Construction and Retrofits of electrical monitoring systems, central plants, air handling units, and evaporative cooling/humidification systems.

  3. Expert experience of mechanical, electrical and life safety systems associated with critical environments.

  4. Advanced proficiency in programming PLC code and performing PLC configurations and validations while architecting tools for automation of development and deployment of PLC based systems.

  5. Experience programming state machines, data acquisition, and PID control with proven experience to design fault-tolerant systems with error handling and recovery.

  6. Advanced proficiency in modern text based programming languages (Python, Java, C, VB) and in database systems (MSSQL, MySQL, Access).

  7. Knowledge of controls hardware such as PLCs, RIOs, DDC Controllers, instrumentation, and field devices.

  8. Working knowledge and familiarity of other Critical Facility systems such as electrical power distribution, Mechanical (HVAC) systems, emergency power supply (generators), Control Systems and life safety systems.
