The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) / Phlebotomist, under the direction of a Licensed Practitioner, Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides basic nursing care and assists with activities of daily living and performs skilled and accurate blood collection procedures to a designated group of healthcare consumers. In addition, creates an organized work environment that is conducive to efficient workflow for the clinical staff. Provides services which encompass the spiritual, physiological, social, and psychological aspects of care of the sick, prevention of disease, or conservation of health. The position contributes to the mission and core values of CHI Health.

Key Job Responsibilities

  1. Under the direction and supervision of the Licensed Practitioner, RN or LPN, participates in the nursing process which includes: assess, plan, implement, and evaluate. The nursing process is an ongoing process that can end at any stage.

  2. Assessment - Contributes to the assessment of the health status of the healthcare consumer.

  3. Plan – Contributes to the plan of care through observation, data collection and communication of findings to the appropriate member of the multidisciplinary team.

  4. Implement – Provides basic patient care activities based on the plan of care and as delegated.

  5. Evaluate – Contributes to the evaluation of the healthcare consumer by observing responses to interventions and communicating findings to the appropriate member of the multidisciplinary team.

  6. Transports, collects, receives and prepares biological specimens for all age groups of patients for analysis using procedures consistent with safe work practices and proper laboratory techniques, while maintaining the integrity of the specimens.

  7. Organizes and prioritizes workload for the most efficient, accurate, and timely collection and processing of specimens in order to meet quality standards of laboratory testing.

  8. If required by facility, performs patient testing, maintenance, daily quality control, testing of proficiency samples for bedside monitors and records results in Laboratory information system.

  9. Ensures accurate and timely registration, billing, and audits of reference lab patients and outpatients. Follow up and investigation into medical necessity, diagnosis and order clarification as appropriate.

  10. Documents cares provided in the healthcare consumer’s record.

  11. Demonstrates personal and professional responsibility for ongoing development, practice, and education. Maintains a safe work environment. Fosters a collaborative environment in support of the nursing profession

  12. Performs clerical functions to include by not limited to- filing, maintaining patient logs, generating reports, records and scheduling patient appointments.

  13. Sets priorities for response and communicates with appropriate personnel.

  14. Responds appropriately in emergency situations as support for clinical staff.

What is a Resource Team? The Resource Team is a nursing pool developed by CHI Health for flexible nurses, providing high quality care to patients across multiple nursing departments. Your base rate of pay, merit increases, shift differentials and holiday pay are given in an identical manner as for all core staff. Because the Resource Team is designed to value flexibility, anyone committed to a .6 or higher will earn premium differential pay in addition to normal differential pay.

Premium Differential Pay:

Day Shift, 6:30 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., earn an extra 10%

Night Shift, 6:30 p.m. – 7:00 a.m., earn an extra 15%

.6 FTE or highers

Resource Team is for you, if you wish to:

• Maximize your income by earning premium differential pay.

Resource Team is not for you, if you:

• Wish the stability of working on a single unit.



  • Must be at least 16 years of age as required by state

  • Must have successfully completed the 75-hour state approved course for Nursing Assistant if hired into the Nursing Assistant position after April 30, 1998 as required by state

  • Nurse Assistants must be on the Nurse Aide Registry of the State in which they work if hired into the Nursing Assistant position after April 30, 1998 as required by state

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) required

  • Phlebotomy certification or completion of phlebotomy course preferred.
