JOB GOAL:

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

Under limited supervision, the instructor is responsible for teaching and developing Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education courses to students enrolled in the Kirkwood Community College’s Secondary Programs. Primary work location is in Cedar Rapids, but teaching locations may vary, as classes can be located onsite at businesses, on KCC’s Main Campus, or at one of KCC’s regional centers. Class times and duration vary depending on the project. Normal hours are Monday-Friday 8am-5pm, with occasional evening or weekend work depending on current project load.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide contextualized, scaffolded, interactive instruction that includes cooperative learning tasks and implements College and Career Readiness, English Language Proficiency, and CASAS ESL standards for the provision of IET/IELCE bridge programming to Secondary Programs students.

  • Assist students with coursework in a variety of formats including individualized instruction, computer assisted instruction, large group courses, and other methods.

  • Under the direction of the Workforce Supervisor and Associate Director, develop curriculum related to workforce training and bridge programming for non-credit students.

  • Collaborate with fellow instructors and program leadership on curriculum development, student intake/advising, and staff development activities.

  • Conduct CASAS assessments for eligible students.

  • Track attendance daily and submit reports.

  • Respond in a timely matter to communications and requests from program director and coordinator.

  • Participate in team meetings and ongoing professional development opportunities.

  • Perform other related work duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

Position involves working in an office setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

  • Prior experience teaching adult ESL/ABE learners or working with adult immigrants

  • Prior experience teaching ESL or foreign language at any age

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in TESOL, Education, Foreign Language Teaching or related field

  • TESOL training/certification preferred, such as K-12 certification in ESL, bachelors or graduate studies in TESOL, TEFL certification or completion of MN Literacy Council pre-service training courses for adult ESL educators (http://online.themlc.org/).
