JOB GOAL:

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

This is a non-sworn public safety position. Under supervision of Public Safety Administration, promote positive behavior and protect the welfare of students, faculty and staff. Observe, report, and safely intervene when the safety and security of all Kirkwood Community College properties, students, faculty, staff and visitors are compromised. Enforces established Public Safety and College policies, in support of the College mission and vision. Responds to emergencies, and participates in planning of Public Safety functions. Engages with students, faculty, staff, guests, emergency responders, & other community members. Provides a collaborative and educational approach in developing a safe learning community for all campus constituents.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct proactive patrols of campus buildings, lots, and grounds by foot, vehicle, or thru the use of surveillance systems such as access control, security cameras, etc. to protect physical property, network infrastructure and individuals on campus.

  • Perform lock/unlocks according to schedule or request.

  • Respond to routine and emergency requests for service.

  • Assist with the College response to critical incidents.

  • Respond to emergencies, provide first aid, and coordinate with law enforcement, fire, EMS or other emergency personnel as appropriate.

  • Provide first aid and crisis intervention support.

  • Maintain radio communication with other public safety personnel and officers on campus.

  • Assist with Public Safety, Threat Assessment and Title IX investigations as requested.

  • Maintain daily activity log, writes and submit incident reports utilizing public safety software.

  • Enforce traffic and parking regulations.

  • Assist with traffic control as needed.

  • Inform and enforce Kirkwood policies and local, state, and federal law.

  • Provide safety escort services for visitors, students, staff, and faculty.

  • Provide other public assistance, such as lockout services, jump-starts, and routine information.

  • Observe and report irregularities, such as security issues, safety hazards, facilities issues, unauthorized and suspicious persons.

  • Conduct scheduled preventative maintenance checks of public safety, life safety, and emergency related equipment.

  • Utilize software related to the inventory management tracking and distribution of lost & found items.

  • Serve as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.

  • Models and supports community oriented policing model.

  • Monitor alarm systems and responds to alarms when received.

  • Perform public safety dispatcher related duties as assigned.

  • Preform other related work duties as assigned.

  • Shift differential-Additional hourly compensation may be provided for hours worked outside of the normal business hours, which are generally considered first shift, Mon – Fri. (Approximately $2.00 per hour outside the normal business hours of 6:00am – 6:00pm, Mon. – Fri.)

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling, grasping, and exposure to less than optimal temperatures & outside weather conditions. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking up to five plus miles per shift, climbing stairs, repetitive motion, talking and hearing.

Person in this position must satisfactorily complete Kirkwood’s Blood borne Pathogens training due to the potential exposure risk to blood or body fluids. Must satisfactorily complete Kirkwood’s CPR/AED/First Aid, stop the bleed, and must complete Mental Health First Aid training.

Ability to read, write, and speak fluent English. See color spectrum, and have adequate hearing. Vision must be correctable to 20/20.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2 years of law enforcement, security, or public safety related experience OR a combination of closely related experience and education.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • CPR/AED/First Aid certified within 6 months of employment.

  • Stop the bleed certification within 6 months of employment.

  • Ability to obtain Certified Protection Officer (CPO) certification within 6 months of employment and maintain certification for duration of employment.

  • Valid Iowa Driver License with a good driving record and ability to be covered through the College’s insurance.

PREFERREDQUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

  • Prior law enforcement, security, or public safety experience in a higher education setting preferred.

  • Bachelor’s degree in in a closely related field or combination of relative experience and education.

  • Hand Cuffing and Pepper Spray certification preferred.

  • Completion of NIMS ISC 100 and 200
