The mammography/DXA technologist is responsible for working within the established guidelines of Breast & Bone Health as assigned. The technologist is expected to understand and support the Mission and Vision of St. Luke's Hospital. As a professional, the mammography/DXA technologist is responsible for carrying out the philosophy and objectives established by the Board of Directors. Foremost among these responsibilities are strictly adhering to detail in the technical performance of mammography and/or DXA procedures, providing excellent customer service, solving practical and analytical problems, resolving conflict, and implementing constructive change.

Essential duties and responsibilities

The mammography/DXA technologist: Provides timely, and customer oriented services to the patients of Breast & Bone Health, assuring that the technical process is carried out in a precise and professional manner.

  • Greets all customers, patients, coworkers, healthcare providers and other hospital personnel, with a pleasant and professional manner and appearance.

  • Performs careful and accurate work in the mammography and/or DXA area as assigned.

  • Validates patient identification utilizing appropriate identifiers.

  • Performs procedural exams within specified turnaround time for assigned area.

  • Assures procedural exam guidelines are strictly adhered to, comply with exam procedure technical factors and protocols in consultation with the radiologist.

  • Assists with the administration of contrast agents according to procedure guidelines and radiologist direction.

  • Cleans equipment after procedures per department policy.

  • Secures retrieval of prior studies as appropriate for comparison and follow up imaging purposes.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of and follows St. Luke’s Hospital infection control plan and emergency procedures specific to Breast & Bone Health.

  • Documents all necessary information in the performance of technical procedures and quality control measures.

  • Consistently demonstrates attention to detail in following protocol for patient history, exam, image identification and labeling.

  • Maintains compliance and is responsible for executing and monitoring technical practices in order to meet necessary standard recommendations and requirements of government agencies (i.e., IDPH, ACR, FDA, JCAHO, OSHA).

  • Understands and adheres to all safety practices (ALARA) while performing duties to minimize any risk of injury and/or exposure to unnecessary ionizing radiation.

  • Documents pregnancy appropriately for females of childbearing age. If pregnancy or the possibility of pregnancy exists the radiologist and referring provider will be contacted prior to the performance of the radiologic procedure.

Provides ongoing support for patients within the Breast & Bone Health Department.

  • Performs patient education relating to mammography and bone densitometry

  • Asks patients regarding domestic violence and follow-up appropriate.

Supports an integrated and organized delivery of services through effective intra- and inter-department coordination to enhance the hospital’s environment and image.

  • Communicates with the department supervisor/manager and documents as necessary when problems or unusual circumstances arise.

  • Attends scheduled technologist meetings and staff meetings.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Is aware of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of department or hospital administrative staff.

  • Purposefully conducts all aspects of job in an ethical manner in support of hospital’s commitment to ethical behavior in all areas of personal and professional activity.

Supports effective department operations.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of MRS (Mammography Reporting System).

  • Demonstrates knowledge of digital equipment/computers and PAC’s.

  • Operates all medical/job-related equipment within the Breast & Bone Health Department as assigned.

  • Practices good independent decision-making skills based upon knowledge of the overall department functions, policies and procedures.

  • Promotes the development, preparation, implementation and attainment of departmental goals, policies and procedures.

  • Maintains an adequate level of productivity.

  • Accurately observes ATMS regulations.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of computer programs assigned by department.

  • Prioritizes work appropriately and assists others as time and workload allows.Supports professional and community endeavors.

  • Follows hospital dress code and wears proper identification at all times.

  • Facilitates cooperative formal and informal working relationships with other staff and/or medical office personnel.

Maintains continuing education requirements as defined by state and federal law.

  • Attends in-services, CPR/AED training, on the job training, and continuing education programs to meet developmental needs and keep abreast of new technologies. Documents at least 24 hours of continuing education with 1 hour in radiation safety in a two-year period. Mammography/DXA technologists must document an average of 5 CME hours/year in mammography with 15 CME’s in a 3-year period as required by state and federal regulations. DXA technologists must document appropriate CME hours in accordance with the certification body (ARRT or ISCD).



Must be a graduate of an accredited program in Radiologic Technology and ARRT certified.


Must have current permit issued by the Iowa Department of Public Health. Must have appropriate training for the modality assigned. Must have advanced level certification in mammography by the ARRT or be eligible to write the advanced level certification test. Must have certification in bone densitometry by the ARRT or ISCD or be eligible to write the DXA certification test. Must possess current validation of CPR and AED training, renewed every other year, AED training provided annually.
