CITY OF BURLINGTON EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY PART-TIME MAINTENANCE MECHANIC FOR VEHICLE MAINTENANCEPart-time, non-supervisory position in the Vehicle Maintenance Division of the Public Works department.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSPerform work relative to inspection, servicing, repairs, preventative maintenance of city owned vehicles & equipment including non-motorized & small motor powered equipment. Perform service calls, pick up, deliver parts & mechanical components, performs facility cleaning, shuttles vehicles. Maintains records & assists mechanics as directed. Drives heavy trucks including snowplows during severe weather, snow and ice events.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSDemonstrate initiative in conformance with described duties & responsibilities as they are assigned, Follow & read written & oral instruction/direction. Knowledge in the operation & use of tools, equipment (large & small) used in the city, safe operation & use of common shop equipment & tools including OA torch and light/heavy lift equipment. Knowledge in safe use of chemicals, materials & products related to vehicle & equipment repair facility, read & use technical manuals, operator & maintenance manualsrelated to equipment & vehicles used throughout the city. Properly identify vehicle/equipment parts & components. Able to perform duties with minimum of supervision & make to make recommendations for improvements, through proper channels for the good of overall operation. Ability to demonstrate physical strength, agility, endurance & temperament to meet the challenges of the position regarding deadlines, extremes of weather & other circumstances for extended periods of time, including a clutch while operating heavy duty trucks with manual transmissions for 12 hour shifts. Physically able to lift 50 poundsfrequently and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Work well with other city employees and the general public. Ability to demonstrate knowledge and use of safe work practices. High School diploma or GED. Minimum two years of recent experience in inspection, service, repair & preventative maintenance of vehicles or equivalent training. Must possess a valid Iowa Driver's Licensewith a Class B CDL within thirty-days of employment and a Class A CDL within sixty days of employment (other endorsements may be required by the manager.) Employees must live in Des Moines County or in Iowa within 15 air miles of Burlington city limits, pass a pre-employment drug test, physical exam and a State of Iowa background investigation.ANNUAL SALARYPart-time position; AFSCME Bargaining Unit Range 10. Starting Wage: $20.94 hour
