Job Title: Material Handler

Dept./Location: Packaging

Reports To: Production Supervisor/Packaging Manager

FLSA Class: Nonexempt position

Job Summary:

Transport material in the most productive, efficient, accurate, and safe manner with due concern for product quality and condition.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Attaches case identifiers to materials and identifying information to pallet; transports finished product to and from warehouse staging area.
  • Operates material handling equipment safely and efficiently to minimize risk to personnel and damage to inventory and equipment.
  • Demonstrates safe work practices to prevent on the job injuries by following all company and OSHA safety regulations.
  • Performs accurate and timely record keeping, including but not limited to; production recording and data collection information; direct issues components and reconciles work orders where appropriate.
  • Follows all standard operating procedures. Performs changeover and set up for production runs.
  • Counts, weighs, and records number of units of materials moved or handled on daily work order.
  • Reads work orderschedule specifications to determine work procedures and material requirements.
  • Assures that material transferred and placed for use on packaging lines is accurate and timely. This includes, but is not limited to raw goods, packaging materials, containers, caps, etc.
  • Moves work materials from mezzanine to production line, dumps product into bin and or vibratory feeder, using pallet jacks, hand reach lift, electric hoist, electric or air barrel dumpers; operates palletizing and de-palletizing equipment.
  • Recycles all materials including, but not limited to, cardboard, plastic, shrink wrap, and paper.
  • Performs routine battery changes on forklifts.
  • Assists in the training of new Material Handlers and ongoing training of current employees.
  • Communicates material handling/processing information to coworkers in a timely manner to ensure efficient operation of the production line.
  • Inspects machinery/equipment and work floor conditions to ensure compliance with company safety and sanitation standards.
  • Visually inspects all incoming materials and outgoing product to maintain company quality standards.
  • Identifies daily production problems by observing machine operation, reading schedules/work orders and reporting information to appropriate supervisory staff.
  • Monitors and audits material inventory and informs supervisor of needs or discrepancies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned not an essential function.

Education and Training:

  • Possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Onsite training specific to job responsibilities.
  • Must obtain forklift certification.
  • Sign off on the Material Handler qualification checklists, lock-out tag-out, following appropriate training.

Protective Clothing and Devices:

Many of the job duties of this position require you to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), if so, when and how to use this equipment will be explained to you at the time of hire.

To determine ability to perform job functions where the use of a respirator is required, employees will be given a physical examination prior to performing this type of work.

SQF:

Has a critical role in assuring food safety and quality within the manufacturing environment by upholding food safety and regulatory policies and responsibilities.

Responsible for maintaining cleanliness and good housekeeping

Ensure all food safety and quality records are completed accurately and timely.

Follow all appropriate equipment cleaning procedures.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

This position is in a manufacturing plant environment, works around moving mechanical parts, is exposed to airborne particles, and works around motorized vehicles.
