Job Description

The Safety Engineering Section seeks a motivated, personable Transportation Planner to join our team in analyzing crash types and roadway characteristics in an effort to reduce the tragic circumstances that lead to serious injuries and fatalities on streets and highways.

What you’ll do:

  • Provide traffic safety planning services to DOT bureaus and districts as well as to local agencies statewide.

  • Manage the Strategic Highway Safety Plan and Traffic Safety Research Program.

  • Investigate and prepare roadway safety studies.

  • Develop and manage special safety projects/programs.

  • Serve as a representative of Safety Engineering Section for project meetings, traffic incident management committee, and multi-disciplinary safety teams.

  • Represent the Iowa DOT in a professional manner.

  • Consult with supervisor and teammates when appropriate.

This role requires the application of transportation safety principles to the unique problems encountered, as well as knowledge of the project development process, and the DOT organizational structure. Coordination and communication with various DOT offices, as well as federal, state and local agencies is essential. This includes making presentations at public meetings such as workshops, public hearings, city council meetings, and professional conferences.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in any field, and experience equal to six years of full-time work in professional transportation planning*/engineering.

  • Licensure as a professional engineer by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board, and experience equal to two years of full-time work in transportation planning*.

  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work as a Transportation Planner 2 or Transportation Engineer.

  • "Transportation planning" includes preparing planning contracts and grants; managing planning grant application submittals and project development; preparing functional classification appeals; developing travel demand models and traffic forecasts; creating cartographic representations and data collection applications; analyzing transportation data, project plans, and reports to identify problems; developing portions of statewide transportation plans; or conducting/coordinating transportation research projects.
