Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Simulation, Modeling, and Decision Science program at Ames Laboratory, a Department of Energy National Laboratory affiliated with Iowa State University, is searching for a qualified Postdoctoral Research Associate.

This position will develop a cloud-based set of modeling and analysis tools needed to support the development of a tightly couple digital twin; extend an existing cyber-physical power system platform; and develop new design tools for advanced hybrid power systems. Specific challenges include the development and implementation of integrated models that accurately represent the physics and dynamics of advanced hybrid power systems including the differences in time scale between the various components. This position will participate in the developing and conducting of research experiments using a cyber-physical test platform and will collaborate with research staff and graduate students within the Simulation, Modeling, and Decision Science program to support the cyber-physical design paradigm for advanced energy systems (ie., systems controls, operations, and optimization). The duties of this position will also include collaborating with the research staff at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) to support the maintenance and supervision of the daily operation of the state-of-the-art cyber-physical experimental facility, Hyper.

The successful candidate will possess excellent communication skills, both written and oral, in order to meet the needs of this position. The successful candidate will have the ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team of administrative staff and power system research professionals.

At the discretion of the Program Director, this position may be based out of the Ames Laboratory main site in Ames, IA or at the Ames Laboratory field office at NETL in Morgantown WV. In either case frequent travel between the two sites will be required.

Required Education and Experience

• Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field must be completed prior to start date.

Preferred Education and Experience

• Demonstrated experience with cloud-based analysis and modeling of power systems. • Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of the microservice paradigm and its use in physics-based modeling of energy systems. • Demonstrated use of analysis and data analytics to evaluate and respond to the dynamic characteristics of large-scale energy systems. • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with developing engineering models of power systems and power system components using C++, Python, and Go. • Demonstrated experience developing microservices as a scientific computing research platform.
