Agricultural Research Service Incinerator Operator in Ames, Iowa

Summary This position is located within United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service (ARS), National Centers for Animal Health (NADC) in Ames, Iowa. The incumbent serves as Operator-in-Charge to operate and maintain center natural-gas and propane/fuel-oil fired pathological incinerators for disposal of wastes that may contain infectious materials. Responsibilities Modify or construct auxiliary equipment as necessary. Basic knowledge of pumps, blowers, air filters, steam sterilizers, electronic scales, and programmable controls. Coordinate incineration operation with research and caretaker staff to pickup solid wastes from airlocks. Operate the incinerator, monitor incinerator controls, determine when next load can be added to the incinerator, determine if incinerator is operating properly or needs to be shut down, clean and disinfect the incinerator areas. Decontaminate materials such as dirty clothing and other materials that will not be incinerated through a steam sterilizer (autoclave) before removal from the incinerator areas. Clean, disinfect, and maintain the incinerator equipment and related areas. Maintain written records and report on the incinerator, sterilizer, air filters, fuel usage, and other items as needed. Record the weight and estimated heat content of materials loaded in to the incinerator. May assist higher graded employees, receive specific instruction and supervision as necessary for the task. Skill in using maintenance and repair manuals and blueprints that are pertinent to the incinerator operation. Knowledge and experience in the use of various types of personal protective equipment (PPE) and knows how to use PPE for self-protection from zoonotic diseases under research at the center. Knowledge of written biosafety protocols for personal protection and protection of the environment. Physical Effort: Work requires active walking, prolonged periods of standing, climbing, stooping, bending, crawling, and working in cramped positions or crowded areas. May be required to lift equipment weighing up to 100 lb. Working Conditions: Incumbent is exposed to varying abnormal and high temperatures (up to 200 degrees F while charging) and conditions both indoor and outside of buildings. Required to wear personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks, respirators, and ear protection during normal operations. Must wear a full face respirator when working in biological control settings; facial hair restrictions may be required to comply with proper operation of personal protective equipment Works in areas where equipment is in continual operation, noise levels are abnormal and odors prevail. Subject to exposure to infectious agents, mechanical injury, gas, cuts, bruises, fumes, dirt, and grease. Education This position does not have an education qualification requirement.
