No day will be the same as you provide a mix of services including individual counseling; group counseling; crisis intervention; case management; and psycho-educational and outreach programming to students, staff, faculty, administrators, and parents/families

Iowa State University’s Student Counseling Services (SCS) seeks a Clinical Therapist to provide direct client care to a dynamic and diverse student population. The Clinical Therapist provides psychological services to assist students in attaining their educational, academic, and personal goals. These services include individual assessment and counseling; crisis service system support; group counseling or workshop facilitation; and psycho-educational and outreach programming to students, staff, faculty, administrators, and parents/families. Candidates will also be expected to work closely with the varying level of student trainees in the counseling center.

The successful candidate will be expected to function as a team player and be able to assess, manage, and ensure high quality mental health counseling.

Example of Duties• Provides individual, couples, career, and group psychotherapy to students.• Assesses client needs through interviews, tests, and observations.• Conducts psychological, substance abuse, and eating disorder assessments.• Attends to and evaluates the client’s report of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.• Provides treatment through psychotherapy and other resources.• Writes notes and reports on progress.• Conducts intake interviews of clients.• Assesses client needs and make appropriate referrals to other professionals and community resources.• Provides intervention during client crisis.• Coordinates a program area as assigned.• Researches and develops educational and prevention presentations.

• Provides crisis coverage on a regular rotation of staff.

This position serves at the pleasure of university administration and is exempt from certain P&S policies.

Level Guidelines• Senior-level position possessing high-level professional and/or technical skills working independently under minimal supervision to support ISU’s mission and department or work unit goals• Applies senior-level professional knowledge and expertise to work requiring greater latitude• Solves moderately complex problems and regularly exercises judgment to determine appropriate action• Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issue and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices• Responds to complicated inquiries, provides training, and provides direction to lower-level staff• May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e., leads a small work team)• May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist• Provides guidance to students
