Job Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Department of Architecture, in the College of Design at Iowa State University (ISU), invites applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of Design. Exceptional candidates with commensurate experience and proven track record will be considered for tenure and advanced rank of Associate Professor.
The department seeks qualified candidates for the start date of Fall 2024 who demonstrate excellence in design pedagogy and speculative design research. Candidates will be expected to make substantial and visible contributions to our program’s strong studio tradition of scholarly design teaching /learning through conceptualization, visualization, performance and making ; and join our efforts to build an architectural education upon a plurality of foundations that consider varied epistemologies, experiences, histories, and methodologies emerging from within or outside the discipline. We understand architecture to be a cultural product that navigates a complex system of voices and ideas, as well as myriad social, environmental, political, and aesthetic concerns. In this context, an ideal candidate must articulate a clear and forward-looking pedagogical position followed by the willingness to build a contemporary studio paradigm that advances new cultures of design and new modes of thinking that prepares students not only for present-day urgencies but also imagined futures. We seek highly motivated candidates versed in the discipline of architecture, and who intend to cultivate a record of excellence in design teaching bolstered by a robust design research agenda, creative activity, and/or expanded studio practice .
Successful candidates will be expected to establish, sustain, and grow a world-class externally funded research/creative activity program that complements or aligns with the department’s areas through independent and collaborative efforts. Additionally, the candidate is expected to establish a record of scholarship at the highest levels, contribute to the teaching missions at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and engage in institutional service and service to the profession. Candidates should have strong communication skills, share our commitment to enhancing excellence and exhibit the potential for long-term leadership in supporting the mission of the department, college, and university.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
MArch, or BArch + Graduate degree in Architecture or closely related field.
Associate Professor candidates must also meet the university standards for appointment to the rank, including significant experience/accomplishments in the candidate’s area of expertise.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in scholarly design teaching.
A record of speculative design research, creative activity, and/or committed engagement in an expanded studio practice.
Recognition in teaching, research and/or creative activity in one or more of the following areas: design representation; installations, theories of making and material culture; design pedagogy; or critical spatial practice.

The Department of Architecture, with accredited programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, has a long history of excellence and is consistently ranked one of the top programs in the country. The College of Design brings together prestigious programs in architecture, studio arts, industrial design, graphic design, interior design, landscape architecture, and community & regional planning. The collaborative opportunities that emerge from the close interaction of these disciplines are one of the college's greatest advantages. The College of Design is home to approximately 1,930 (360 architecture) undergraduate and 180 (60 architecture) graduate students. Personnel in the college are dedicated to the broad, interdisciplinary education of design professionals.
