The North Polk Community School District is a progressive educational community located in the Des Moines metro area just north of Ankeny serving the communities of Alleman, Elkhart, Polk City, and Sheldahl. The District proudly serves over 2200 learners from preschool through 12th grade in five buildings (West Elementary, PK thru 2nd; Big Creek Elementary, 3rd-5th; Central Elementary, PK thru 5th, Middle School, 6th-8th; and High School, 9th-12th).

North Polk's Buildings and Grounds Department is seeking to hire an Assistant Maintenance Technician with North Polk School District, located in Alleman, Iowa. Individual must be flexible, collaborative, and willing to learn and grow. Compensation: $23-25 per hour, commensurate with experience

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Receive and complete maintenance requests for projects including, but not limited to, minor carpentry, electrical, and plumbing.

  • Performs minor general maintenance on facilities and equipment including screens, windows/treatments, doors, furniture, handrails, tile, etc.

  • Inspect and verify operation and safety of heating boilers, air handling units, and ventilation systems.

  • Conduct an on-going program of general maintenance for HVAC, plumbing, and general upkeep

  • Communicate and collaborate project status with appropriate parties.

  • Move furniture or equipment as requested for various activities as directed.

  • Assist with landscaping and general outdoor projects, including mowing. Perform snow removal when needed. Apply pre- and post-ice control material.

  • Paint parking lots and sport fields.

  • Respond to after-hour emergencies as needed. Responsible for alarm calls off hours.

  • Maintain an inventory of products and supplies. Follow district procedures for procurement of needed supplies.

  • Uses tools and equipment including ladders and scissor lifts routinely.

  • Check for safety hazards and report them to the Director of Buildings and Grounds.

  • Assist custodial staff as needed and act as a backup in their absences.

  • During breaks, prepare buildings for the next school year sharing the responsibility of overseeing summer help.

  • Ensure exit doors and panic bolts are working properly.

  • Maintain a regular schedule of motors and equipment requiring scheduled servicing.

  • Repairs and performs minor maintenance on plumbing fixtures including repair of faucet leaks, sink stoppers, and shower heads; frees clogged sinks and drains.

  • Other duties as assigned.

    Specifications/Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum of 1 year of related experience.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the areas of carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and mechanical systems required.

  • Ability to comply with Maintenance On-Call Procedure.

  • Ability to promote and follow policies and procedures.

  • Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.

  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions.

  • Operating knowledge of trucks, trailers, power tools, hand tools and landscape construction equipment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Position requires full shift on feet, walking.

  • Driving between buildings and locations

  • Lifting up to 75 lbs occasionally and 30 lbs frequently, work performed with arms extended overhead on occasion

  • Frequent ladder work required

  • Performing work or being in close proximity to loud work will require ear protection

    Working Conditions:

  • Includes extremes of temperature and humidity.

  • Hazards include stairs, ladders, dust, and communicable diseases.
