Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Community Food Systems Program, a joint program between Community and Economic Development (CED) Extension and Outreach and Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) Extension and Outreach, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Program Assistant I.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is heavily involved in local food system development in Iowa through the Community Food Systems Program, Local Foods Program Team and CED Extension and Outreach. The Program supports the development of community food systems through research, education and outreach in collaboration with diverse partners. The Community Food Systems Program (CFSP) works with five food system sectors: production, transformation, distribution, consumption, and resource management as well as six community core values: equity, education, economy, wellness, policy, and environment. The Community Food Systems Program (CFSP) is developed and managed within the Local Food Program Team core areas: (1) Partnership Development, (2) Community Development, (3) Economic Development and (4) Evaluation; and within the Community Economic Development core areas of leadership and design.

The Program Assistant I will provide program facilitation, coordination, and project assistance to the Community Food Systems Program (CFSP) Coordinator. Responsibilities of this position include assisting with logistics for train the trainer programs such as Community Food Systems and Local Food Leader; facilitation of annual events and programs, and coordination of CFSP projects. The Program Assistant will be an informational resource and will perform investigative research for program materials and projects. The incumbent will assist the Program Coordinator in research of grant opportunities and potential project partners and funders. The CFSP Program Assistant will seek new and develop new and existing partnerships.

The successful candidate will possess strong organizational skills along with the ability to organize and manage multiple projects. Excellent written and verbal communication skills will be necessary in order to professionally communicate with university and non-university colleagues. The candidate will also demonstrate the ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment and discretion. The Program Assistant may represent the CFSP and Extension and Outreach to internal and/or external audiences at meetings and conferences where needed.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and related experience; OR a combination of education and/or related experience totaling more than 4 years unless otherwise specified under supplemental required education and experience. Experience must be at a comparable level and directly related to the duties of this position.
