Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of English in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University invites applications and nominations for the administrative appointment of department chair at the rank of professor with tenure.

The ideal candidate will possess the vision and interpersonal skills necessary to lead a large department representing a diverse range of degree programs, interest groups, and stakeholders; work to integrate the department further and foster interdisciplinary relationships; encourage excellence and innovation in research, teaching, and service; represent the interests of students, alumni, staff, non-tenure-eligible faculty, and other faculty ranks; promote diversity and inclusion among all members of the department and its constituents; facilitate faculty efforts to attract extramural grant and contract funding; manage departmental budgets and personnel; and build relationships with potential donors and stakeholders. The ideal candidate will also advance the department’s national and international reputation.

The successful candidate may also have the opportunity to maintain their own program of scholarship in a manner that is consistent with a primary administrative appointment.

  • National recognition for scholarly contributions.

Department/Program & College Description

The Department of English offers BA degree programs in English, Literature, Rhetorical Studies, and Speech Communication; a BS degree in Technical Communication; as well as—in partnership with the Department of World Languages and Cultures—a minor in World Film Studies. On the graduate level, the department offers MA degrees in Literature; Rhetoric, Composition, and Professional Communication; TESL/Applied Linguistics; as well as an MFA program in Creative Writing and the Environment.

The department also offers two PhD programs in Applied Linguistics and Technology and Rhetoric and Professional Communication. Final administrative appointment could be B-base (9 mo) with summer salary negotiated or A-base (12 mo). Administrative appointment term will be five years ending 06/30/2023.

This position is for current ISU faculty members at the rank of tenured professor in the Department of English.
